Ozone Friendly Plastics?

Postby tstuebs on Fri Aug 18, 2006 9:21 pm

In reseaching the use of Ozone for sanitization I'm trying to find out the effects Ozone has on certian plastics, in particular ABS. Anyone have any knowledge of this? Thanks

are you using ozonated water to sanitize, or flooding an entire room/chamber with ozone? what kind of ozone concentration levels are we talking about?

Using it to sanatize. Spraying it an empty ice storage bin after cleaning. I'm thinking our levels would be around 0.10 ppm to 0.15 ppm, but I have tested yet so that may vary.

that shouldnt be a problem, as long as the ozone is in water. Ozonated water is much less volatile than ozone gas.

Even ozone gas at .1 - .15 ppm should be OK for momentary contact with ABS plastic.

Make sure your ozone concentration is high enough to sanitize the surface consistently, too low concentration in combination with too short an exposure time may mean unsatisfactory results

Thanks for the advice. Does anyone know where I can find a chart that would give me guidlines for ppm needed based on the type of sanitization needed?

really, every situation is different. When ozone comes in contact with microbes, bacteria, spores, etc, it kills them. the key is - did the ozone make contact with every single cell? with enough ozone and enough contact time, the effectiveness should be 100%.

Where did you get the ozone generator/equipment? They should be able to help you out with its uses.

I ordered my first sample generator from Cashido. I need a small package generator and that seemed to be a good starting point. I'm familiar with bacteria testing so I figure I'll play around with this unit and see where we fall in.

FYI...I found this list of Ozone and it's effects on materials.

That chart does give you a rough idea. It is important to note that in solution with water, ozone doesnt react nearly as strong as in its gaseous form. Also, in the presence of moisture or other elements in the ambient air, ozone can have a much worse effect on certain materials. The concentration level and exposure time will be be the biggest factor.

You should experiment a little, but my guess is that you wont have any troubles with your ABS plastic in your situation.

Here you can get general compatability info with many different materials!

ABS is actualy very goods for lower levels of ozone such as what is used for shock treating or the ppm levels that air treatment machines emit. I would not however use ABS for an ozone stream that is in the several hundreds or thousands of ppm.
